Faculty Resources: Vocation and Advising

This volume's 13 contributing scholars identify with a wide variety of faith traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, & Sikhism. Some claim more than one tradition; others would claim none. Rather than seeking to 'translate' Christian language into other perspectives, they reflect on various facets of vocation from the standpoint of their own traditions.

Vocation is most often linked with a specific calling for those in professional ministry. Doing More with Life explores the way higher education can expand this limited understanding of vocation. Specifically, this volume shows that higher education can clarify how God calls all people, allow mentoring across specific vocations, and inspire future generations to think of their lives as vocations

The chapters in this book contend that attention to vocational concerns promotes the civic good promised by defenders of liberal arts education. In doing so, their authors suggest that the good of higher education is larger than the immediate, practical benefit an individual student gains while earning a degree, that addressing enduring questions is essential if students are to meet the challenges and crises facing them.

To promote advisor influence in higher education, experienced contributors explain new trends-including the impact of external forces and legal issues on postsecondary institutions-and the evolution of advising as a profession and a field of inquiry.
